I can’t sleep, and a lot of it is because I’m actually still in such a rage from this comment that happened in my intercultural communications course today. We were reviewing the effect Disney corp. has had on media, gender roles, race and ethnic portrayal, commercialism, etc. and the kid sitting next to me goes
“Well look, we all grew up on Disney and we turned out fine, so it can’t be that bad”
to which I responded
“well that’s easy for you to say, you’re a white male - you’re the hero in every movie.”
But ARGH how can you hear a six year old girl say she thinks if her friend was in abusive relationship than she’d be happy for her friend and “she should just try being pretty and kind and then he’ll love her and they’ll be happy” AND STILL SAY YOU THINK THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT NEGATIVE IMPACT?
