My name is Lydia. I like all sorts of stuff. 20 years of age. In college. I'm all for being crazy. Life's short, might as well not be bored by it. I stand by my beliefs - who else will? I enjoy laughter. I like boys, and I like girls in the same way. My life is pretty much a constant cycle of ridiculousness. You can ask me stuff if you want.
What might look like a giant nebula or a distant galaxy at first glance, is in reality the glowing ends of a fibre glass lamp.
The images were created by taking long-time exposures of several fibre glass lamps (exactly, those ugly-looking lamps, that were extremely popular in the 90`s) moving around in a darkened room. Afterwards, several images were multiplied in photoshop to achieve the density of such a structure.
Aerogel, also know as frozen smoke, is the world’s lowest density solid, clocking in at 96% air. If you hold a small piece in your hand, it’s practically impossible to either see or feel, but if you poke it, it’s like styrofoam. It supports up to 4,000 times its own weight and can withstand a direct blast from two pounds of dynamite. It’s also the best insulator in existence.
Chemistry at its finest
can i eat that
Why don’t we use this for everything?!?
This shit is about the coolest thing ever.
It’s such a great insulator that a thin layer of it will protect anything from the heat of a bunsen burner.
Even though it’s incredibly light and has an extremely low density, its lattice-like molecular structure makes it able to hold objects much greater in mass.
What if you got loads of it, and made a bed, you could pretend you were a pegasus
Possibly one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.
Again, because science boner.
holy shit science
Can it absorb force at all?
Would it make the coolest armor ever?
If I’m remembering correctly, it’s fairly brittle. It’s also very expensive, I looked into getting some as a present for my dad once, $60 for a 2.5x2.5x1 cm block (that’s like the size of a lego), and $200 for a 5x7.5x0.7 cm tile.
